Pas de fontaine Wallace dans le premier arrondissement de Paris, pourtant considéré comme le "centre" de la capitale mais au gré de votre promenade, n'hésitez pas à transgresser l'itinéraire que je vous propose afin de partir à sa découverte.

 

 

Rue Saint Spire, angle de la rue d’Alexandrie

Au beau milieu du Sentier, quartier voué depuis le début du 20ème  siècle à de la confection et au commerce de gros pour le textile et l'habillement, les rues Saint Spire, d’Alexandrie et Sainte-Foy, dessinent, avec la Galerie du Caire, une place triangulaire où loge discrètement cette fontaine Wallace.

Difficile d’accéder à la place autrement qu’à pieds tant ses accès sont bouchés par les camions de livraison. Mais quand on y parvient, on peut s’asseoir sur l’un des bancs miniatures qui entourent la fontaine et observer les graffitis recouvrant les murs gris ou le bal des livreurs, tirant leurs diables en serrant les mains des commerçants de passage. Car ici, semble-t-il, tout le monde se connaît et l’effervescence qui anime les rues donne l'impression qu'il s'y passe toujours quelque chose. En effet, il y a à faire dans les nombreux passages et ruelles pittoresques : on aime se promener, faire son marché rue Montorgueil, les boutiques rue Cléry, ou admirer les nombreuses verrières des bâtiments construits pour recevoir au mieux la lumière du jour nécessaire au travaux de confection, comme au 124 de la rue Réaumur.

Bien avant de devenir le quartier du Caire suite à l’expédition de Bonaparte en Egypte, le coin était si malfamé que la police même n’osait s’y aventurer ! C’est aussi là que l’on trouvait la Cour des Miracles, témoin chaque soir du prodige faisant retrouver toutes leurs facultés aux invalides ayant mendié tout le jour, qui inspira Victor Hugo pour Notre Dame de Paris.

 

 

 

 

Boulevard de Sébastopol, square Chautemps

En continuant rue d’Alexandrie puis rue Saint Denis, on tombe sur la rue du Caire qui nous mène, sur la gauche, jusqu’au boulevard de Sébastopol. Ancien boulevard du Centre, créé en 1854 par Haussmann, et renommé après la victoire des troupes de Napoléon III à Sébastopol, en Crimée, en 1855, il héberge sur l’un de ses larges trottoirs cette fontaine Wallace.

A ses côtés, derrière la balustrade de la station de métro Réaumur Sébastopol, s'étend le square Emile Chautemps, dessiné par Jean Charles Alphand.

Rue Saint Martin, face au square, siège le Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers, dédié, depuis sa fondation par l’abbé Grégoire en 1794, à la formation – scientifique, culturelle ou professionnelle – des personnes, de tous âges et de tous horizons.

De l’autre côté du boulevard, le passage Ponceau abrite l’un des nombreux entrepôts de textiles du quartier du Sentier où jadis, boutiques et ateliers étaient florissants. La plupart de ces commerces a été racheté par des Chinois.

Ces nouveaux arrivants ont fait du Sentier le centre des importations directes des articles textiles chinois à bas prix qu'ils répartissent dans la France entière. D'où d'incessants ballets de camions sources de problèmes dans ce vieux Paris aux rues étroites.

Curieusement, ces grossistes n'ont pas modifié l’aspect extérieur des locaux et c’est ainsi, par exemple, que l’on rencontre derrière la vieille et typique devanture d'une boulangerie un amas d'énormes ballots en toile de jute, chacun marqué d’idéogrammes chinois.

 

 


 

Passage du Pont aux Biches 

Derrière le square, la rue Saint Martin croise, vers le Nord, la rue Notre Dame de Nazareth. Au niveau de la rue Volta, se dessine une petite ruelle pavée menant à un escalier de béton : c’est le passage du Pont-aux-Biches.

Ce passage qui doit son nom à un pont sur un égout qui longeait autrefois la rue Notre-Dame de Nazareth et à une enseigne représentant des biches, semble protégé par une fontaine Wallace, qui y monte la garde et interdit l’accès aux voitures. Toutefois, rien n’empêche les scooters d’encercler la fontaine jusqu’à l'enlaidir, ni les graffiteurs de consteller les parois de la partie couverte du lieu d’aphorismes en tout genre, tels que « si voter était utile, ce serait interdit ».

Alentour, la rue Volta (du nom du physicien italien inventeur de la pile électrique) possède, au numéro 3, un de ces immeubles à colombages du 15è siècle remarquablement restaurés, dont certains quartiers de Paris, épargnés par les transformations du Second Empire, peuvent s’enorgueillir.

La rue Notre-Dame de Nazareth, elle, abrite la plus ancienne grande synagogue de Paris, fondée en 1822.

Quant à la rue Meslay, qui a vu naître Georges Sand, elle propose une profusion de magasins d’usine et de boutiques de grossistes qui font d’elle le paradis du soulier, le saint des saints de l’escarpin et de la botte à prix « cassé » : une vraie caverne d'Ali Baba !

En quittant le passage par la rue Volta, emprunter la rue Vertbois, sur la gauche, traverser au niveau de la rue Turbigo et rejoindre la rue Elisabeth mène rue Dupetit Thouars.

 

 

 

Place Nathalie Lemel

Au croisement avec la rue de la Corderie, la place Nathalie Lemel, baptisée en 2007,  lors de la Journée internationale des Femmes, du nom d’une militante ayant activement participé à la Commune de Paris accueille une fontaine Wallace et la terrasse d’un petit restaurant.

D’un côté, rue de la Cordonnerie, une façade blanche conserve les inscriptions d’une ancienne table « parigote », annonçant à la carte sa cuisine « tout au beurre », ses casses-croûtes et son Beaujolais.

De l’autre côté, rue Dupetit Thouard, sous une belle structure de métal bleue à la verrière lumineuse et aux ferronneries en arabesque, édifiée à l’image des Halles Baltard, s’étend le Carreau du Temple. Situé à l’emplacement de l’originelle « Halle aux vieux linges », il s’agit d’un ancien marché en plein air où les marchands du Temple et les fripiers des rues faisaient affaire et où, tout au long du 20è siècle, les parisiens fauchés venaient s’habiller.

Ce royaume de la « nippe », où la « râleuse » (la vendeuse) devait rabattre le « gonce » (le client) afin de gagner quelques « thunes » (de l’argent) et où sont nés la plupart des mots d’argot concernant les vêtements, a été déserté par bon nombre de chineurs au profit des puces de Clignancourt. Mais malgré cela l’ambiance y est toujours vivante et la vieille coutume du marchandage persiste. De même, la méthode d’attribution des places qui veut, selon l’anecdote, que les marchands déposent chaque matin leur médaille dans un panier et qu’ensuite le receveur-placeur les tire puis les accroche au tableau est toujours de rigueur.
